
Why Is Your Boiler Losing Pressure After Refill?

A boiler pressure gauge that drops again shortly after you have topped it up is more than an annoyance, particularly when heating or hot water is needed. A boiler losing pressure after refill usually means water is escaping from the sealed heating system, or that a component is not managing pressure correctly as the system warms up. Repressurising may restore operation temporarily, but it does not normally remove the cause.
The good news is that the fault is often identifiable. A small leak, a dripping pressure relief valve or a problem with the expansion vessel are common reasons. The timing of the pressure drop gives a useful clue, and a qualified engineer can diagnose the issue safely without guesswork.
What boiler pressure should look like
Most modern sealed-system boilers should show around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold. The exact recommended setting is usually shown in the boiler manual or on the front panel. Once the heating is running, the pressure will naturally rise as the water expands. A modest increase is normal.
What is not normal is for the gauge to fall repeatedly towards zero when the system is cold, or for it to climb sharply while heating is on and then drop very low again after cooling. If the boiler locks out due to low pressure, you may lose heating, hot water or both until it is refilled.
It is sensible to top up the system once if the pressure has dipped slightly after radiator bleeding or a recent repair. If you need to do it regularly, such as every few days or every week, arrange a boiler diagnosis rather than continuing to refill it.
Why a boiler loses pressure after refill
A leak somewhere in the heating system
The most common explanation is a water leak. It may be visible around a radiator valve, pipe joint, boiler connection or towel rail. Look for damp patches, staining, corrosion, a small puddle or a green or white residue around fittings.
However, many leaks are slow and hidden. Pipework may run under floors, behind cupboards or within walls, where a homeowner cannot inspect it easily. The absence of an obvious puddle does not rule out a leak. An engineer can check the boiler and system methodically, then advise on the repair required.
The pressure relief valve is passing water
A pressure relief valve is a safety component that releases water if boiler pressure becomes too high. It usually connects to a copper discharge pipe that runs outside the property. If this valve fails to reseat properly after opening, it can drip continuously and lower the system pressure over time.
With the boiler cool, check the end of the external discharge pipe for persistent dripping or signs that the ground beneath it is regularly wet. Do not block, cap or interfere with this pipe. It is a safety outlet and needs professional attention if it is discharging when it should not be.
A faulty expansion vessel
The expansion vessel manages the natural increase in water volume as the heating system gets hot. If it has lost its internal charge or the internal diaphragm has failed, boiler pressure can rise quickly during a heating cycle. The pressure relief valve may then discharge water to protect the system.
When the boiler cools, the gauge may show very low pressure again. This pattern often leads people to refill the boiler repeatedly, only for the same problem to return. An expansion vessel fault is not a suitable DIY repair. It needs correct testing and adjustment or replacement by a qualified heating engineer.
A recently bled radiator needs topping up
Bleeding radiators releases trapped air, and this can lower system pressure. In this situation, topping up once to the manufacturer’s recommended cold pressure is usually expected. The pressure should then remain stable.
If it continues falling after the refill, there is likely a separate issue. Repeated bleeding can also introduce more disruption to the system, so do not keep doing it in the hope that the pressure will settle on its own.
A filling loop or internal valve problem
On some boilers, a filling loop left open can allow pressure to rise too high. The pressure relief valve may then release water, and the pressure can later drop. Internal valves and seals can also fail, particularly on older boilers.
After topping up, ensure any external filling-loop taps are fully closed as instructed by the boiler manufacturer. Do not force stiff valves or leave a key, hose or filling connection in place unless the manufacturer’s instructions specifically say to do so.
Safe checks you can make before calling an engineer
Start by noting the pressure when the boiler is completely cold. Then check it again after the heating has been running for an hour or two, and once more after it has cooled. These readings help show whether pressure is steadily falling, or rising excessively when hot.
Look around accessible radiators and valves for moisture or corrosion, and inspect beneath the boiler only if it can be done without removing the casing or disturbing pipework. Check the external pressure relief discharge pipe for drips. If you find a visible leak, place a towel beneath it if practical, avoid using any affected electrical items nearby, and arrange a repair.
Do not remove the boiler case, adjust internal parts or attempt to repair a gas appliance yourself. Do not keep repressurising a boiler that quickly loses pressure either. Too much water added to the system can contribute to further pressure problems and may mask a developing fault.
When low pressure needs urgent attention
A low-pressure boiler does not always mean an emergency, but it should not be ignored. Book an engineer promptly if pressure repeatedly falls, the boiler displays a fault code, water is visible around the appliance, or the heating will not stay on.
Turn the boiler off and seek urgent professional help if you see a significant water leak, smell gas, feel unwell with symptoms such as headaches or dizziness, or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds. Leave the property where appropriate and follow the emergency guidance supplied by your gas network and appliance manufacturer. Never try to locate or repair a gas leak yourself.
For landlords and property managers, recurring pressure loss is worth dealing with quickly. A boiler that needs frequent topping up can leave tenants without reliable heating or hot water and may lead to a larger repair if the underlying cause is left unresolved.
What an engineer will check
A proper diagnosis starts with the pressure pattern, boiler model and any fault codes. The engineer will inspect accessible components, look for evidence of leaks, assess the pressure relief valve and test the expansion vessel where appropriate. They may also check radiator valves, system connections and the boiler’s internal seals.
The solution depends on the fault. A loose valve connection may need a straightforward repair, while a failed pressure relief valve or expansion vessel may require replacement parts. If there is a hidden leak, further investigation may be needed before any repair can be priced accurately. A clear diagnosis matters because simply restoring pressure does not tell you why it was lost.
