
How to Relight Gas Boiler Safely at Home

A boiler going off can quickly turn a comfortable home into a cold and frustrating place, particularly when you need hot water as well as heating. If you have searched for “how to relight gas boiler”, start with one rule: do not attempt to relight or reset anything if you can smell gas, hear hissing near the boiler, or feel unwell.
Most modern domestic boilers do not have a pilot light that you relight with a match. They use electronic ignition and may simply need a safe reset after a temporary lockout. Older appliances can be different, which is why the boiler manual and the fault code on the display matter before you press a button.
Safety checks before you relight a gas boiler
First, check whether there is any sign of a gas leak. A sulphur-like or rotten-egg smell, an unusual hissing sound, or a gas alarm should always be treated seriously. Do not use matches, lighters, electrical switches, doorbells or appliances. Avoid making calls inside the property, open doors and windows if it is safe to do so, leave the building, and contact the gas emergency service from outside.
Do not try to remove the boiler casing, touch internal wiring, adjust the gas valve or dismantle any pipework. These are not homeowner checks. Work on the gas-carrying parts of a boiler must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
If there is no gas smell or other immediate danger, look at the boiler display. Make a note of any error code, symbols or flashing lights. A code can point to ignition failure, low system pressure, a condensate issue, a loss of gas supply or a different fault altogether. Resetting without reading the display can make it harder to identify a recurring problem.
How to relight a gas boiler with electronic ignition
For many boilers, relighting means carrying out a reset rather than lighting a flame yourself. The exact button position and reset time vary by manufacturer, so the instructions in your boiler manual take priority.
Begin by checking that the boiler has power. The display should be on, and the fused spur or power switch serving the boiler should be in its normal on position. If the display is blank, do not keep switching it on and off. A power issue, blown fuse or boiler fault may need investigation.
Next, confirm that the gas supply has not been intentionally turned off. If you know the boiler isolation valve has been closed for previous work, do not reopen it unless you are certain it is the correct valve and there is no smell of gas. If other gas appliances are also not working, the problem may be with the supply rather than the boiler itself.
Check the heating controls too. Set the thermostat above the current room temperature, make sure the programmer is calling for heating, and confirm that the boiler is not in holiday, standby or summer-only mode if you are expecting the radiators to heat. For hot water, check that the hot-water setting is enabled where your boiler has a separate control.
If the display shows a lockout or ignition fault and the manual permits it, press and hold the reset button for the stated time. Some boilers use a button marked “reset”; others require you to turn a selector to a reset position briefly. Wait for the boiler to complete its start-up sequence. You may hear the fan and ignition process, then the burner should fire without any intervention from you.
Give it a few minutes, then check whether the error code has cleared and whether hot water or heating is returning. Do not repeatedly press reset. One reset is often reasonable where the manufacturer allows it. A second attempt may be appropriate if the manual specifically advises this, but repeated lockouts are a fault symptom, not a solution.
Check boiler pressure without guessing
Low pressure is a common reason for boilers to stop working. On many sealed systems, the pressure gauge should normally sit around 1 to 1.5 bar when the system is cold. The acceptable range differs between makes and installations, so check your manual if you are unsure.
If the gauge is clearly low and you have previously been shown how to use your own filling loop, you may be able to top up the system slowly to the recommended pressure. Close the filling loop properly afterwards. Never overfill the system, and do not force stiff valves or use a filling loop you do not recognise.
Pressure that keeps dropping is not a normal maintenance task. It can indicate a leak, an issue with the expansion vessel, or a faulty pressure relief component. In that situation, arranging a boiler diagnosis is safer than topping it up again and again.
What about an older boiler with a pilot light?
Some older gas boilers have a permanent pilot light. The lighting instructions are usually printed on the boiler fascia or inside the manufacturer’s manual. Follow those instructions exactly and only if the appliance is designed for user relighting.
Typically, the process involves turning the control to the correct position, waiting for any residual gas to disperse as directed, and using the built-in igniter while holding the control. However, there are important limits. Never use a match or lighter unless the manufacturer explicitly instructs you to do so, never bypass a safety device, and never continue if the pilot will not stay lit.
A pilot that repeatedly goes out can be caused by a failed thermocouple, blocked pilot assembly, poor combustion, ventilation concerns or another gas-related fault. Those checks require an engineer. A boiler that will not keep its pilot flame should not be treated as a simple relighting job.
Reasons your boiler may not restart
A reset can clear a one-off interruption, but it will not repair the issue that caused the lockout. Cold weather can freeze an external condensate pipe, for example, while low water pressure may prevent a sealed system from firing. An ignition fault can also result from worn components, a fan issue, a blocked flue, poor combustion or interrupted gas supply.
If the boiler restarts once and then fails again, take that seriously. Repeated loss of heating or hot water is disruptive, but continually resetting the appliance can mask an underlying fault and may leave you without heating at the worst possible time.
Look out for warning signs such as banging or gurgling noises, water beneath the boiler, burning smells, soot marks, an unusual yellow or lazy flame on an older visible pilot, or a carbon monoxide alarm sounding. Turn the boiler off if it is safe to do so and seek professional help. Carbon monoxide has no smell, so a working alarm is an essential household safeguard.
When to call a Gas Safe engineer
Call for professional boiler repair if the boiler will not reset, displays the same fault code again, loses pressure repeatedly, leaks, makes unusual noises or has no visible power. You should also call an engineer if you are a tenant and your landlord or managing agent needs an accurate diagnosis before authorising work.
For landlords and property managers, a boiler fault should be dealt with promptly, especially where it affects heating or hot water. Keep a note of the error code, when the issue began, whether the boiler has been serviced recently, and whether other gas appliances are working. This helps an engineer arrive prepared and can reduce delay.
