Tumble Dryer Not Heating Up? Causes and Fixes

A tumble dryer not heating up is more than an inconvenience when washing is piling up, school uniforms are needed or a rental property needs to stay in working order. The drum may still turn and the display may appear normal, but clothes come out cold, damp or only partly dry. The useful question is not simply whether the dryer has failed, but whether it is on the wrong setting, struggling with airflow or has developed a component fault that needs professional attention.

Start with the safe, simple checks

Before arranging a repair, switch the appliance off, unplug it and allow it to cool. A few basic checks can rule out common causes without removing panels or interfering with safety parts.

First, confirm the programme. Some dryers have an air, cool, refresh or delicate setting that uses little or no heat. A heat-pump model may also dry at a lower temperature than an older vented dryer, so the drum and laundry may not feel very hot during a cycle. Try a standard cottons programme with a small, well-spun load and give it time to run.

Next, check that the door is fully closed and the appliance has not displayed an error message. If it has, make a note of the code rather than repeatedly restarting the machine. That information can help an engineer identify the fault more quickly.

A dryer also needs good airflow to dry properly. Clean the lint filter carefully, removing the fine film that can build up on the mesh as well as visible fluff. If your machine has a condenser unit, filter or heat-exchanger filter that is designed for customer cleaning, follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Empty the water container on condenser and heat-pump models, then refit it securely.

Do not use sharp objects to clean inside the machine, and never operate a dryer without its filters fitted. Filters do not just improve drying performance. They help manage lint, which can become a safety concern when it accumulates around heated parts.

Why is my tumble dryer not heating up?

The cause depends on the type, age and symptoms of the appliance. A dryer that runs normally but delivers completely cold air often has a different issue from one that stops mid-cycle, trips the supply or takes three cycles to dry a small load.

Restricted airflow or poor maintenance

A blocked filter, restricted vent hose or dirty condenser can make a dryer run inefficiently. On a vented model, the hose should not be crushed behind the appliance or packed with lint. It should have a clear route to the outside and should not be excessively long or sharply bent.

Restricted airflow can cause overheating protection to activate. In some cases, the dryer may cool down and work again temporarily. In others, a thermal safety device may need to be tested and replaced. Cleaning the accessible parts is worthwhile, but recurring overheating is not something to ignore.

A failed heating element

On many conventional electric dryers, a heating element warms the air passing through the drum. Elements can fail with age, wear out after prolonged use or develop a break that prevents them from heating at all. The drum may still rotate because the motor and heater are separate parts.

An element cannot be diagnosed accurately from the front of the machine. It requires access to internal components and electrical testing with the appliance isolated. Replacing it may be a sensible repair on an otherwise dependable dryer, but the decision should take the machine’s age, condition and the cost of the required part into account.

Thermal cut-out or thermostat fault

Dryers use thermostats and thermal cut-outs to regulate temperature and protect against overheating. If one fails, the appliance may stop producing heat even though it appears to run as usual. A cut-out may have operated because of a genuine airflow problem, so replacing it without finding the original cause can lead to the same fault returning.

This is one reason a proper diagnosis matters. A competent engineer will check the heating circuit, airflow path and relevant safety devices rather than replacing parts by guesswork.

Faulty moisture sensor

Sensor-dry programmes rely on moisture sensors to judge when clothes are dry. When the sensor bars are coated with detergent residue or fabric conditioner, the dryer can misread the load and end a programme early. Wiping accessible sensor strips with a soft cloth and a little white vinegar, then drying them thoroughly, can sometimes help.

A sensor issue usually means the dryer still generates some warmth but finishes too soon. If there is no heat at all, the cause is more likely to be elsewhere.

Control board, relay or wiring fault

The appliance control board directs power to the heater at the correct stage of the programme. A failed relay, damaged connection or board fault can leave a dryer spinning without heating. These faults can be intermittent: the dryer may work on one setting and fail on another, or it may heat briefly before going cold.

Internal electrical repairs should be left to a qualified appliance engineer. The panels can expose live parts, sharp edges and delicate wiring, while incorrect repairs can compromise safety protection built into the appliance.

Heat-pump dryer problems

Heat-pump dryers use a different drying process from standard vented or condenser models. They are designed to run at gentler temperatures and may take longer, particularly in a cold utility room or when overloaded. A blocked filter system, full water container or poor airflow can have a noticeable effect on drying time.

If a heat-pump dryer is consistently cold, shows an error code or no longer dries after cleaning its user-serviceable filters, it needs specialist diagnosis. Do not dismantle sealed sections or attempt a repair based on a video tutorial.

When a repair call is the sensible option

Book an appliance repair if you have cleaned the accessible filters, checked the programme and the dryer still produces no heat. You should also stop using it and arrange help if there is a burning smell, unusual buzzing, repeated stopping, scorch marks, excessive heat around the cabinet or a supply issue when the dryer starts.

For landlords and property managers, a dryer that is running but not drying can easily become a recurring tenant complaint. Prompt diagnosis is usually better than repeated call-outs caused by a temporary reset or a replacement part fitted without testing the rest of the system.

When you contact an engineer, have the make, model number and a clear description of the fault ready. Mention whether the drum turns, whether the appliance gets even slightly warm, which programmes have been tried and any error code shown. Can you keep using a dryer that has no heat?

It is generally not useful to continue running a dryer that is not heating, as it will waste electricity and place unnecessary wear on the motor and drum system. More importantly, do not continue using it if there are signs of overheating, a burning smell or abnormal noise. Switch it off, unplug it and leave it disconnected until it has been checked.

Avoid common shortcuts such as bypassing a thermal cut-out, operating the appliance with filters removed or repeatedly resetting it after it stops. Those measures can turn a repairable fault into a more serious safety problem.
